CO-ORDINATOR

Academic Exchange Club

Academic Exchange Club is a type of sister-school exchange program. We meet with three (3) other schools in the area to explore creative thinking, problem solving, and teamwork activities. We meet at McGee once or twice a month to prepare for meets.

The club will be held after school, bimonthly, all year.

Board Game Club

This club gives students an opportunity to play a wide variety of board games and enjoy a snack with their peers in a friendly atmosphere.

The day will be announced but will meet all year from 2:30-4:00 p.m.

Card Club

Students come after school to trade and play their Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh cards and talk about strategies used during games.

We will meet on Wednesday, all year, from 2:30 until the late bus or until 4:00 p.m. provided you have your own transportation home.

Creative Lego Building

Use a Lego kit to build creative models. Create your own design or use a pre-planned design to guide you. Share your final product with your peers.

This club will meet on the second and fourth Monday of the month until the late bus.

Grade 6 Career Squad

This club is looking for Grade 6 students to assist with Career Education Activities. Students should have an interest in learning about careers and like the idea of developing their public speaking, leadership and teaching skills.

This club will meet weekly, Semester 2, Day 4, Period H.

Chess Club

Students meet once a week beginning in March. All levels of ability are welcome. Beginners can come and learn the game. A tournament will begin in April with awards to the top three players.

This club will meet weekly, after school, until the late bus, starting in March and continue through May.

Color Guard

The Color Guard participates with the Spartan Band at the town’s Memorial Day Parade by performing a flag routine to the band’s musical selection. It is open to any 7^th or 8^th grade students.

It is held various days during Period H and/or after-school during May.

First Lego League

Participants learn how to build basic machines, introductory programming, team work, project development and presentation skills.

First Lego League will meet the first half of the year on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 until the late bus.

F.I.R.ST. Robotics – Grades 7 and 8

FIRST intends to inspire curiosity and create interest in science and mathematics among Middle and High School students by introducing them to the world of engineering showing the connection between classroom and real world applications.

FIRST will meet in the evening and on Saturdays all year.

Girls Club – Grade 7

This is a social club and any 7^th grade girl is welcome to join.

It is held on the first Monday of the month from 2:30 to 3:00 or 3:15 if they can get a ride home.

Greeting Card Club

Is your best friend’s birthday around the corner? Do you know someone that had a really bad day? Would you like to send a special thank you to a friend, teacher, or relative? Then come demonstrate your creativity by making a personalized greeting card for that someone. All students are welcome!

The Greeting Card Club will meet Wednesdays, after school, until the late bus throughout the second semester.

March Madness

Students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 participate in a co-ed basketball tournament while raising money for charity.

The students meet during Period H and after school to practice. The event is held in the Spring.

Math Counts

Students with strong math skills will be challenged and learn to problem solve at a competitive level. A team will be chosen to compete in the state tournament in February.

We will meet weekly on Tuesday’s from 2:20 until the late bus.

McGee Crime Scene Investigators

This highly entertaining and scientific after school program allows you to think and act like a crime scene investigator. You will learn about how to collect and analyze a variety of evidence (fingerprint, handwriting,, blood, shoe print, and fiber analysis – to name a few) as well as how to use these skills in order to help solve crimes. If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a CSI, then this is the club for you!

The club will meet on Tuesdays in the Spring from 2:30-3:30. You will need to provide your own transportation home.

McGee Garden Club

This club will be co-sponsored by the Kensington Garden Club with possible additional help from the Senior Center, UpBeat, and the scouts. The club is open to any student who makes and honors a commitment to participate positively in club activities. The purpose of the club is to share the enjoyment of gardening, learn about gardening, and provide a service to McGee by designing, planting, growing, and maintaining the McGee garden and assisting teachers in preparing garden-related activities for their classes.

The meetings will be held on Thursdays, after school, in the Library-Media Center and outside right after school through 3:00 p.m. starting in the Spring.

McGee Milers

An opportunity to run the Hartford Marathon with a McGee staff member. Additionally, students also raise money for local charities.

It is held during Period H in the Fall.

Needlepoint

Students will make two projects. One will be done with counted cross-stitch and the other will be done with plastic canvas. It is open to boys and girls.

This activity will be held on Tuesdays in January and run through April, 2008 until the late bus.

Rocket Club

Open to all students who would like to make and launch model rockets.

We will meet weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2 weeks in February from 2:30 until the late bus.

Service Photography

Students learn use of high end digital SLR cameras as they photograph school events/athletics for the yearbook, school videos, and commercial media.

This activity will meet all year on Tuesdays from 2:30 until the late bus or as needed.

It is open to all grades. Students work together to promote school spirit and community service.

They will be meeting all year. The days and times will vary. They will meet during Period H and after school.

Upbeat Adventurer’s Program

The McGee Upbeat Adventurer’s Program provides students with the opportunity to develop and strengthen leadership decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills, and increase self-awareness. During a three-day camping trip, students will participate in a variety of team building, rope course, and cave exploring activities that are designed to be both challenging and fun.

Spring trips only.

Upbeat

The goal of this program is to engage a variety of students in different activities that will allow them to meet new people, gain new interests, and enhance leadership skills. Activities will vary, including hiking, community service projects, and evening drop-ins. We will also be incorporating a “Homework Helpers”(study center) once a week after school using tutors from Berlin High School.

Leadership programs will be held for all three (3) grades throughout the year.

Activities will run all year. Upbeat Drop-ins will be held twice a month on Friday evenings.

The “Homework Helpers” will be on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30 beginning in October.

Yearbook Club

Students will design and produce the McGee yearbook. Various committees will co-ordinate everything from advertising and sales to photography and distribution.

The Yearbook Club will meet all year until April but the times will vary according to deadlines that need to be met.

Intramural Clubs

Intramurals are based on available supervision. This includes Tennis, Archery, Fitness Club, Basketball, Volleyball, Floor Hockey and wiffle ball.

Japanese Club

This is a new club just formed. Students will learn about the culture and the language of Japan.

It is held on Tuesdays and all students are welcome.
