Life Skills Bread Baking Program® offered by the King Arthur Flour Company

March 2008

Dear Parent or Guardian:

On Thursday, April 10, 2008, all sixth and seventh grade students will participate in the Life Skills Bread Baking Program® offered by the King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, Vermont. During an assembly, Paula Gray, an educator from the company will demonstrate how to make basic hearth bread. Students will learn that with a little science, a little baking instruction and some good flour, they can bake their own bread! The following supplies will be provided by the King Arthur Flour Company for every student: two-pound bags of All-Purpose flour and 100% Organic White Whole Wheat flour; a packet of yeast; a bowl scraper; a plastic bread bag with a twist tie and a recipe booklet. Roger’s Market of Kensington and Stew Leonard’s of Newington are supporting this program by providing bags for your child to take these supplies home.

Students are requested to make two loaves of bread at home over the weekend. We are asking for your assistance and support in the completion of this request. Please enjoy one loaf of bread with the members of your family. On Monday, April 14, 2008, your child needs to bring the second loaf of bread to school in the bag provided. All loaves collected that morning will be delivered to Berlin senior citizens living in the senior housing complexes, the Salvation Army and Prudence Crandell Center in New Britain, the Bread for Life program in Southington and the Charlie Company 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment in Plainville.

It is our hope that your child enjoys sharing the bread baking skills learned from the program. We also hope your family experiences the joy and satisfaction that comes from helping others. Thank you for contributing to the success of this program.

Basic Bread Recipe

The bread baking skills helped to gather 403 loaves of bread on April 14. By the end of this week, 420 loaves should be the grand total all delivered to needy local organizations. Thank you to all students and staff who participated in this very worthy activity!
