Working in the Library
You are welcome to use the library during any period of the day with a 10-Minute-Library Pass (a blue pass) from your teacher. This pass is used for short visits to the library. For example, you may need to select a book, return a book, or make an appointment. If you need to come for more than ten minutes or use a computer, you must obtain a Full-Period Pass (a yellow pass for Period H) from Mrs. Sencio or Ms. Averill. Your teacher cannot give you a Full-Period Pass to the library-media center. The following rules apply: 1. Come to the library to get the pass before the period-of-library use begins. 2. Use the library for research purposes. 3. Be prepared to stay for the whole period. 4. Stay on task. Important: Always sign in on the clipboard at the circulation desk and put your pass in the box when you arrive at the library. We must know who is in the library at all times.
Food, drink, makeup, balms, ointments, lotions, chewed gum can soil and damage library materials, equipment, and furnishings. Help to take good care of your library-media center by using these items in more appropriate locations.
Borrowing Materials
You may check out two items at a time. If you have borrowed one book and it is overdue, you may not borrow a second book. All library privileges are suspended until you return the item or pay for it if you cannot find it. Library privileges include visiting the library independently and using the library-media-center computers. Materials usually circulate for three weeks. Sometimes you may be allowed to borrow a book for overnight only. Overnight books must be returned to the library first thing the following morning. Reference books do not circulate. Please go to the circulation desk to sign out and return materials.
Accelerated Reader Program
Please participate! All you need to do is read! The program works as follows: 1. Sign out a book from our Accelerated-Reader list. 2. Read the book. 3. Make an appointment to take the test. 4. If you pass the test, you will earn points. You can use the points to select items on display in the showcase! At the end of the year you will be able to attend an event during which top participants are recognized.
STARS Volunteer Program
If you are interested in volunteering in the library during Period H once each week, please fill out an application form and return it to Mrs. Sencio.
Computer Rules and Procedures
Read the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) with your parents or guardians, both you and your parent or guardian sign the AUP form, and return the school copy to your morning meeting teacher.
Return all overdue materials.
Before using a computer, ask permission from Ms. Averill or Mrs. Sencio.
Sign in on the purple sheet.
Place the card for the computer in the pocket on the computer.
Use your own account number and password to log onto the computer
Follow the AUP Guidelines when you use the computers. Never allow another student to use a computer onto which you are logged or share your account number and password with another student. These actions violate the AUP policy and could result in loss of the computer privileges of both students.
Be sure to give credit to the people whose ideas, images, and words that you use. Use the work of others ethically. Do not plagiarize. Use the Noodle Tools, an on-line works-cited generator, or the “MLA Works Cited Worksheet” to keep track of your sources so that you can cite the works that you have used.
Use the computer to complete your own work. You may not use the computers in the library to do the work of other students unless you have written permission from your teacher naming the people working on your group’s project.
You may not use the computers to play games or access instant messaging, e-mail, blogs, chat rooms, list- serves. Never give personal information on the Internet!
If you find yourself accidentally at an inappropriate site on the Internet, report it immediately to Ms. Averill or Mrs. Sencio.
Respect the computer equipment and network. Changing settings on the computers, reconfiguring equipment, repetitive and purposeless keystrokes do not demonstrate respect. Changes and damage result in problems for other users and the loss of your computer privileges.
Ask permission each time before you print from Ms. Averill or Mrs. Sencio.
When you are done, log out, sign out on the purple sheet, and return the computer card to the box.

Africans in America-
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/home.html
The Africans in America Web site is a companion to Africans in America, a six-hour public television series. The Web site chronicles the history of racial slavery in the United States -- from the start of the Atlantic slave trade in the 16th century to the end of the American Civil War in 1865 -- and explores the central paradox that is at the heart of the American story: a democracy that declared all men equal but enslaved and oppressed one people to provide independence and prosperity to another. Africans in America examines the economic and intellectual foundations of slavery in America and the global economy that prospered from it. And it reveals how the presence of African people and their struggle for freedom transformed America.
